Client Needs It ASAP — When Urgency Is a Red Flag
Real deadlines exist. Clients have launches, events, publishing schedules. Urgency is sometimes genuine and the project is otherwise clean — clear scope, fair rate, good brief.
The phrase
"Need it ASAP" / "Urgent" / "Can you start immediately?" / "We needed this yesterday" / "Tight deadline — can you turn this around fast?"
Why urgency isn't automatically a red flag

The flag isn't urgency alone. It's urgency without scope.
What it signals when scope is missing
Urgency is being used to skip the brief.
When a client leads with "ASAP" before defining what they need, they're using time pressure to compress the scoping conversation. The goal — conscious or not — is to get you started before you've asked the questions that would reveal how complex or risky the project is.
Once you've started, the scope conversation is much harder. You're already committed.
Urgency transfers the client's poor planning to you.
Most "urgent" projects aren't urgent because of external deadlines. They're urgent because the client waited too long, changed direction, or didn't plan. Their timeline problem becomes your weekend problem — often at no additional cost.
It predicts a chaotic project.
Clients who start in crisis mode tend to stay in crisis mode. Urgency at the inquiry stage is a preview of how they'll manage the project: reactive, last-minute, with expectations that you'll absorb the pressure.
The compound risk
- "ASAP" + "budget TBD" → urgency designed to skip both the brief and the budget conversation
- "ASAP" + "should be simple" → pressure to start fast on work the client has already underestimated
- "ASAP" + "we'll figure out details as we go" → no scope, no timeline, just pressure
- "ASAP" + "unlimited revisions" → rushed start, open-ended finish
What to do
Urgency is fine. Urgency without scope is not. Slow it down:
"Happy to prioritize this. To give you an accurate timeline, I need [specific deliverables, format, length, approval process]. Can you share those? Once I have the full picture, I can tell you exactly when I can deliver."
A client with a real deadline will answer that quickly. A client using urgency to skip the brief will push back on the questions — which tells you what you need to know.
If it's genuinely urgent and the scope is clear, charge a rush rate. Urgency has a cost. Build it in.
